MAGA Judges Shamefully Invalidate Biden’s Student Loan Cancellation, Taking Away Economic Relief for 40 Million Americans
Washington, D.C. – In response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Biden v. Nebraska, MoveOn Political Action will speak alongside borrowers and allies from the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC), Young Invincibles, NAACP, MoveOn, Student Debt Crisis Center, Center for Responsible Lending, We the 45, and more today at noon ET in front of the Supreme Court on the urgent need for immediate and automatic debt relief. Move On Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting also issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision means tens of millions of borrowers are now left without a lifeline. The skyrocketing student debt crisis is deeply personal to millions of MoveOn members who, over the past several years, have signed dozens of petitions about it, made countless calls to members of Congress and the White House, and organized numerous rallies. The MAGA majority on the Supreme Court shows us yet again how far right-wing politicians will go to undo progress for everyday people in order to benefit the wealthiest and most well-connected.
“The Biden administration took important initial steps to level the playing field for borrowers by canceling federal student debt. The president used his rightful powers to do so, following the call from voters and broad majorities of the public demanding debt relief, since Republican leaders in Congress refused to address the student debt crisis. But now we need the president to reaffirm his commitment to this issue by laying out a clear, strong plan that prevents MAGA Republicans and the MAGA majority on the Supreme Court from stripping desperately needed debt relief away from millions of struggling Americans.
“MoveOn members will continue raising our voices to ensure borrowers gain access to relief they deserve. And we will be laser-focused on mobilizing voters to vote Republicans out next November so we can successfully expand the Supreme Court to rebalance the current rigged right-wing institution.”
